A rubric is an educational tool that contains categories that define and describe the important components of the work being completed, critiqued, or assessed. Each category contains a gradation of levels of completion or competence with a score assigned to each level and a clear description of what criteria need to be met to attain the score at each level.
Steps in Developing a Rubric
- Determine an assignment that will effectively reinforce the standards, concepts, and skills you are teaching.
- Analyze the assignment or task that you plan to have the students complete to determine what type of rubric (analytic or holistic) would be most beneficial in assessing the assignment.
- Identify the elements (criterion) that you plan to assess as a part of the activity.
- Determine the various performance levels that will enable you to measure the students'performance.
- Write Descriptors, which are statements that describe what is expected of students at each performance level for each element. Be sure each descriptor provides clear and distinct indications of performance criteria that the students need to meet.
- Determine the point values for each element and performance level that contribute to the overall score or grade of the assessment.
Analytic and Holistic Rubrics
Analytic Rubrics - assesses a student's level of performance on each element standard in the assignment.
Holistic Rubrics - assesses a student's level of performance as a global picture (across multiple element standards) on the entire assignment or task.
An analytic rubric would allow a teacher to distinguish in assessing a student's level of performance as being excellent in research and being average in organization. A holistic rubric would allow the teacher to be more general in assessing the student's overall performance as being good.
Rubric Examples
Total Points Analytic Rubric

- Determine the Performance Levels for the assignment.
- Determine the Elements: Standards and Skills for the assignment.
- Determine the total point values for each of the elements.
- Write a Descriptor for each element at each of the performance levels.
- Determine the point value range for each of the elements at each performance level.
- Provide a column for Scoring the Rubric.
Weighted Point Analytic Rubric

- Determine the Performance Levels for the assignment.
- Determine the total point values for each of the performance levels.
- Determine the Elements: Standards and Skills for the assignment.
- Write a Descriptor for each element at each of the performance levels.
- Determine the weight for each of the elements at each performance level.
- Provide a column for Scoring the Rubric.
Holistic Rubric

- Determine the Performance Levels for the assignment.
- Determine the point values for each of the performance levels.
- Determine the Elements: Standards, Concepts and Skills for the assignment.
- Write Descriptors for each element at each of the performance levels.
